Good wishes poured in for the 80-year-old Mallikarjun Kharge when he won the in-house elections of Congress part for a new chief.
He fought against Shashi Tharoor and got 84.1% votes, that is 7897 votes as compared to Shashi Tharoor who got 11.4% votes or 1027 votes. Shashi Tharoor has too maintained his dignity and not said a word against anyone.
Although Kharge filed his nomination papers on the last day, he has emerged as the winner. He will take over as the party chief on 16th October, taking over the reins from Sonia Gandhi who served as party chief for 24 years.
Kharge on winning the election said that he would do all it takes to strengthen the party and to defend democracy in India.
