Official Language Reporting Issue in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu’s legislative body is expected to adopt a resolution opposing the Parliament Committee on Official Language report, which President Draupadi Murumu received from Home Minister Amit Shah and urged that Hindi be taught in all central educational institutions.

Also on the agenda for the Tamil Nadu assembly are resolutions on the report on the death of the former chief minister Jayalalithaa and the shooting of a Thoothukudi police officer.

One Nation, One Language, One Religion, One Food, and One Culture is a policy that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has enforced. According to TN Chief Minister MK Stalin, this policy will harm the Indian Union.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has threatened to oppose the BJP-led Centre if Tamil Nadu were forced to use Hindi.

Further, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Stalin stated that “recent attempts to impose Hindi are impracticable and divisive in character.”

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, noted in his letter that there were statistically more persons in the Indian Union who spoke languages other than Hindi.

Stalin further stated that it would be equivalent to referring to Hindi speakers as first-class citizens and non-Hindi speakers as second-class citizens to enforce something that is impractical. This will not be tolerated by those who value their mother tongue. According to MK Stalin, Tamil and other languages should be treated equally in an India that values variety and togetherness.

“All languages ought to be recognised as official ones by the government. Please refrain from pushing Hindi on us and inciting yet another linguistic conflict. Don’t try to fan the flames of “mother tongue sentiment,” the Tamil Nadu chief minister admonished.
