The IT department has been asking the taxpayers to file their ITRs for 2021-22 financial year to avoid levy of late fees. It has also asked taxpayers to seek assistance regarding filing of ITR be emailing to orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in or calling help desk numbers 18001030025 and 1800412025.
The IT department said that nearly 39 lakh income tax returns were filed till 4 PM on the last day for filing the returns. Till 30th July, more than 5.10 crores tax returns had been filed.
For people having income of over Rs 5 lakh, a late fee of Rs 5000 would be payable if the returns were not filed by 31st December of the assessment year. A late fee of Rs 1000 would be paid for people who have income below Rs 5 lakhs. For those people who had an outstanding unpaid tax, an additional 1 percent interest per month for delayed filing was to be charged. The late fee, however, was not applicable to those taxpayers whose income was below the taxable limit.
