IMD Warns of Cyclone Mandous

The IMD has given an alert for Mandous as the deep depression over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm. There is an alert for North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

The Mandous has been building up in the region for the past few days and the storm which is hovering over the southwest Bay of Bengal has moved nearly west north westwards for the past few hours at a speed of 8Kmph.

By midnight of 9th December, moving at a maximum wind speed of nearly 85 Kmph, the Mandous is likely to move west north westwards and cross North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the adjoining southern states of Andhra Pradesh between Puducherry and Sriharikota.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been set up in Tamil Nadu in areas like Chennai, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam etc. Three teams of NDRF are in place in Puducherry and Karaikal.

The aim of all this preparation is that there should be no loss of life and a minimum damage to property and infrastructure like power and telecom.

Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba of the National Crisis Management Committee wants that if there is damage of any infrastructure, it should be restored very quickly.
